Oceanic+ app by Apple for Scuba Divers is here

Apple for Apple watch users has launched a new app that will help scuba divers a lot. The app is called Oceanic+. The app was developed by Apple in partnership with Oceanic, an American manufacturer of scuba gear.

 

How download the app

According to Telecom Talk, “Make sure you have the most recent watchOS 9.1 update installed on your Watch Ultra before downloading the Oceanic+ Dive Computer app. In a similar way, the Oceanic+ Dive Computer software only works on iPhones running iOS 16.1 or later.

Make sure you are downloading an app that is released by Huish Outdoors, LLC, by searching for Oceanic+ in the App Store. Downloading the app is cost-free.

The same app will be accessible on the Apple Watch Ultra as soon as you download it on your smartphone. Once the app has been downloaded and set up with your name, emergency contact information, dive experience (student, open water, advanced, dive master, instructor), and sensor authorisation (to access live GPS location and other details), press the Activate Oceanic+ button on your watch. All of these details will sync with your iPhone if you have paired an Apple Watch Ultra with it.”

 

Features

According to Apple, “In the dive planner, users can set their surface time, their depth, and their gas, and Oceanic+ will calculate their No Deco (no-decompression) time — a metric used to determine a time limit for a diver at a certain depth. The planner also integrates dive conditions, including tides, water temperature, and even up-to-date information from the community, such as visibility and currents. Post-dive, users will see data — including GPS entry and exit locations — automatically pop up on Apple Watch Ultra, along with a summary of their dive profile. The summary on the Oceanic+ iPhone app provides additional information, including a map of entry and exit locations, as well as graphs of depth, temperature ascent rate, and no-decompression limit.”

Apple Watch gets battery saver

According to reports, Apple Watch users who are eligible for the watchOS 9 version are getting an update this week, which brings the new power-saving mode for users. The best thing is that the software can automatically turn on when the battery level goes below 10 per cent, and disable it when the Watch has more than 80 per cent of juice. You can manually enable the new mode by going to the Control Centre of the Apple Watch or through the Settings on your iPhone.

 

How the feature works

According to News 18, “So, how does the Apple Watch achieve the additional load of the battery? The company has tuned the feature to turn off critical features like Always-on-Display, alerts from the heart rate monitor, blood oxygen measuring and workout reminders.”

They added, “Apple also says that if the Watch is not linked to an iPhone in its proximity, the Wi-Fi and cellular network on the Watch will also be disabled.

The company has not said how much difference will power-saving mode make on the overall life of the Watch but looking at the features that are getting disabled, we assume you can easily get an hour or two extra worth of juice from the battery. It is also expected that the mode will make the interface experience a bit sluggish and the animation on the Watch won’t be its usual fluid.”

Apple’s mixed-reality headset is not so far

According to Bloomberg, “Apple Inc.’s next major product—a mixed-reality headset that it hopes will vault the company into a new era of computing—isn’t set to arrive until next year. But job listings and personnel changes at the company give a preview of some of the device’s capabilities.

Here’s what we already knew: The headset itself is likely to be priced between $2,000 and $3,000 because it’s a high-end product that will pack a Mac-level M2 chip, more than 10 cameras placed outside and inside the device, and the highest-resolution displays ever featured in a mass-market headset.

We also know that the device will run a new operating system dubbed realityOS, which will include mixed-reality versions of core Apple apps like Messages, FaceTime and Maps. The first version of the operating system, codenamed Oak, is wrapping up internally and should be ready for the new hardware next year.”

 

2016 AR Demo

According to Ars Technica, “In 2016, several AR demos were shown to members of Apple’s board. In one, a tiny triceratops grew to lifesize before the board members’ eyes. In another, a room was transformed into an immersive, leafy environment. But the board was not Rockwell and the company’s most significant barrier. According to The Information, it was Ive, who oversaw both the industrial design and human interface teams at Apple.

Ive and his crew argued against a VR headset because they believe VR separates users from the people and world around them, and that VR headsets look unfashionable. But the Technology Development Group gained the industrial design team’s support by presenting a concept: an outward-facing screen on the front of the headset that showed images of the wearer’s facial expressions and eyes to people around them. The wearer could see the people around them through an external camera feed.”

“Hey Siri” command of Apple is about to change to “Siri” by 2024

Apple is going to change its ‘Hey Siri’ trigger command to just ‘Siri’ either the next year or in 2024. According to 9 to 5 Mac, “Apple is working on a big change to how its Siri voice assistant works. While you currently have to say “Hey Siri” to activate the assistant hands-free, that may not be the case for much longer. Bloomberg reports today that Apple engineers are working to drop the “Hey” part of the phrase, so you’d only have to say “Siri” followed by a command to activate the assistant…”

Though there’s a lot of training and behind-the-scenes work that goes into a change like this, 9 to 5 Mac’s view on this is that, “Apple’s mission to change Siri’s wake phrase from “Hey Siri” to just “Siri” shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Doing so would match what’s offered by Amazon, where you simply have to say “Alexa” to trigger the assistant, not “Hey Alexa.” It would also give Apple a leg up on Google, where the wake phrase is “Hey Google” or “OK Google.””

This change will make Apple’s voice assistant similar to Alexa in this case. In the case of Alexa, one don’t have to sayba two word phrase but one word phase, “Alexa”. But in the case of Apple’s voice assistant Siri, the wake up call is Hey Siri for now. In future most probably in 2024 Apple’s voice assistant Siri will wake up only with one word call, “Siri”.

 

Apple’s reason for doing so

According to NDTV, “It would also put Siri ahead of Google Assistant, which requires the ‘Ok Google’ or ‘Hey Google’ phrases to activate, though users do not have to repeat the wake word when saying back-to-back requests.

Before shutting down its voice assistant last year, even Microsoft had shifted from ‘Hey Cortana’ to ‘Cortana’ on smart speakers.

Apple Music’s spatial audio is coming to select Mercedes-Benz models

Mercedes-Benz announced today that it’s bringing support for Apple’s Music’s spatial audio to certain vehicles. Apple Music launched spatial audio with Dolby Atmos last year on a range of devices, including the iPhone, Mac, HomePod, and Apple TV, but this is the first time it’ll be available natively in a car.

As you might have guessed, the integration doesn’t come cheap. Mercedes-Benz started adding Dolby Atmos to its top-of-the-line Maybach, S-Class, as well as electric EQS and EQE models that come with the automaker’s latest MBUX interface and the 31-speaker Burmester 3D or 4D sound system. While the vehicles themselves cost upwards of $100,000, this doesn’t even include the additional $4,550 (3D) or $6,730 (4D) Burmester sound system that some vehicles have as an add-on.

Apple Music’s Dolby Atmos-powered spatial audio is supposed to enhance music and make it more immersive by spreading out different sounds across audio channels, essentially creating a virtual 3D audio space from your speakers, earbuds, or headphones. Apple Music labels the songs on the platform that support the format, but as my colleague Chris Welch points out, the quality of the mix isn’t always consistent across songs.

 

Apple Music in Mercedes-Benz Models

 

Adding Apple Music’s spatial audio should make it easier for Benz drivers to find songs that support the Dolby Atmos format. And if you’re not an Apple Music subscriber, Mercedes-Benz is also partnering with Universal Music Group (UMG) to label certain songs as “Approved in a Mercedes-Benz,” although it’s unclear where these labels will appear. The automaker says artists will only be granted the “highest quality seal” based on how “the final mix sounds in a Mercedes-Benz.” (And yes, Mercedes-Benz is even giving UMG some vehicles for testing.)

“Sound quality is incredibly important to Apple Music which is why we are so excited to be working with Mercedes to make Spatial Audio on Apple Music available natively in the car for the first time,” Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats said in a statement. “Together with Mercedes, we now have even more opportunities to bring wholly immersive music to our subscribers all over the world.”

Meta cracks down on ad-free Instagram client a day after it launched

A third-party Instagram app, called “The OG App,” which promised an ad-free feed more like the original Instagram experience, has been pulled from Apple’s App Store just one day after it officially launched. It’s not clear if Apple pulled the app at the request of Meta, but the social network confirmed it had taken “enforcement actions” against the service.

 

“This app violates our policies and we’re taking all appropriate enforcement actions,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson declined to elaborate on what those actions were, or if it had been in contact with Apple, but pointed to a blog post outlining Meta’s policies barring clone sites.

 

Meta’s Crack down on Ad-free IG Client

 

The OG App had been in the works for more than a year, according to TechCrunch, which reported its initial launch. The app’s founders told the publication they wanted to provide a “cleaner” version of Instagram without advertising. The app featured customizable feeds without Reels, suggested posts and other newer features that have at times been controversial among longtime Instagram users. The Android version of the app is currently still available.

 

Meta’s policies have long barred third-party Instagram clients, and in recent years the company has filed a number of lawsuits against developers who break its rules, including those barring clone sites. At the same time, the company has also been accused of using those same policies to shut down legitimate researchers’ attempts to study the platform.

 

However, in this case, it seems the creators of the OG App were clearly breaking Instagram’s policies. The company doesn’t offer a public API for developers to build their own versions of Instagram, and on Twitter, The OG App said they had to “reverse engineer” the Android API. The app also raised privacy concerns about how the developers were protecting users’ account information.

 

Despite this, the app had already gained a lot of fans due to its more simplified — and ad-free — experience. Instagram has also been dealing with a backlash against its aggressive pushing of Reels and recommended content. The OG App said it had racked up more than 10,000 downloads before its removal from the App Store “because we listened to them and built what they wanted.”

How will iPhone 15 ‘Ultra’ replace the upcoming Pro Max models?

It’s possible that Apple will change its naming convention with the iPhone 15 the following year. Instead of calling its largest and most expensive device the iPhone 15 Pro Max as one might anticipate given the company’s recent history, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports. More recently, display expert Ross Young predicted that the entire iPhone 15 line would include the Dynamic Island display cutout from the iPhone 14 Pro.

 

Gurman also suggested today that Apple may skip this fall’s event in favour of concentrating on the near term. He asserts that the company will release new Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and iPad Pro models before the year is out. Gurman asserts that because most of those products will be incremental improvements to current models, Apple is “more likely” to make their announcement through a series of press releases.

iOS 16 brings battery percentage icon and other new features

According to MacRumors, “The battery icon in the status bar now displays the exact battery percent, a feature that can be toggled on in the Battery section of the Settings app.

Battery level is available on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models, with the exception of the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and ‌iPhone 13‌ mini. It is also available on the iPhone X and XS, but not the iPhone 11 or the ‌iPhone‌ XR.

Battery percent has not been available on iPhones that have a notch for years now because of space constraints, so this is a welcome change for many ‌iPhone‌ users. Prior to now, checking for exact battery percentage had to be done by swiping into Control Center or using the battery widget.”

Additionally, if you plug your iPhone into a charger, the icon will turn green and display a lightning symbol next to the battery percentage. Apple and Koss dispute over wireless headphone patents ends

Apple and Koss were involved in a dispute regarding the patents of wireless headphones. Patently Apple reported, “Koss Corporation, who invented the first high fidelity “stereophones” has filed a five-count patent infringement lawsuit against Apple. On the basis of violation of patents on wireless headphone technology Koss has sued Apple, Bose, JLab, Plantronics and Skullcandy. The company claimed that famous wireless headphones like AirPods, the Bose 700 and other Bluetooth headphones have copied features from Koss’ Striva line of WiFi audio gear, and it wanted a payback now that the industry had “caught up” to work Koss started in the early 2000s. The best thing about Koss is it didn’t ask the court to block sales of the headphones involved in the dispute. It instead focused on money, demanding that its competitors pay “three times” the damages determined by either the court or the jury.

According to Engadget, “Apple and Koss have ended their feud over wireless headphone patents shortly before trial. As Reuters notes, the two told a Waco, Texas-based federal court on Saturday that they had reached a settlement over Koss’ claims Apple had infringed on patents for wireless audio technology. The terms of the settlement haven’t been disclosed, but the two firms said they made peace on “all matters in controversy.” The trial was supposed to have started today.”

 

Apple Watch Series 8 can be expected to tell if one has fever

In future you can expect your Apple watches to tell you if you need to visit your doctor because Apple Watch Series 8 may be able to detect if you have a fever. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman talked about this in one of his recent articles. Series 8 of Apple watches will not be providing the exact reading of body temperature but will let one know if she/he needs to go to the doctor or use a thermometer. Gurman said, “Apple Watch Series 8 will be able to tell you if you have a fever. You can expect some new health-tracking features in this year’s Apple Watch. In April, I reported that Apple has been aiming to add body-temperature detection to its Series 8 model, assuming the capability passes muster during internal testing. I now believe the feature is a go for both the standard Apple Watch Series 8 and a new rugged edition that’s aimed at extreme sports athletes. It’s unlikely to be available in the new version of the lower-end SE, which is also coming this year.” He added, “The body-temperature feature won’t give you a specific reading—like with a forehead or wrist thermometer—but it should be able to tell if it believes you have a fever. It could then recommend talking to your doctor or using a dedicated thermometer.”

Another device of Apple is going to come to the market and that is an updated version of Airpods. But it will not include temperature monitoring features. Gurman said, “I’m told that neither feature is likely to arrive in the 2022 upgrade, though both enhancements have been explored inside the company and could arrive one day,” But according to an article by Engadget, “Apple’s health ambitions for AirPods might extend beyond using them to boost conversations. Wall Street Journal sources claim Apple is exploring multiple ways it can use AirPods as health devices.”

The Supreme court has denied to hear the Apple-Qualcomm patent case

The Apple-Qualcomm patent case was expected to end in 2019 over a patent. According to a report by Engadget in 2019, “The two companies have settled their patent royalty dispute, ending all ongoing legal action (including with Apple’s manufacturing partners). Apple has agreed to pay Qualcomm an unspecified amount, while both sides have struck a six-year patent license deal as well as a “multiyear” wireless chipset supply deal.”

But recently it has come to notice that the battle is not over yet. Apple has requested for a hearing to potentially invalidate two Qualcomm patents that played key roles in 2017 attempts to ban Apple Watch, iPad and iPhone sales over allegedly infringing modem technology. But the supreme court has rejected the request. According to a report by The Verge, “The Supreme Court declined Apple’s bid (pdf) for a hearing over two Qualcomm patents (US Patent No. 7,844,037 and US Patent No. 8,683,362) that were part of lawsuits filed in 2017, claiming infringement by Apple’s iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.” Though these two tech giants’ dispute was settled, one of them is still in a thought of taking the matter to the court again. According to a report by Reuters, “The U.S. The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) bid to revive an effort to cancel two Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) smartphone patents despite the global settlement of the underlying dispute between the two tech giants.”

 

The settlement

 

The Apple-Qualcomm patent case will settle the companies’ main dispute have agreed a six-year licensing deal. So when Apple approached the Supreme court, the justice department had supporting files to opposing the request. But it is also true that the licensing deal is ending in 2025 or (if extended) 2027. So it is not clear what Apple will do after that.
